Skating on natural ice
When the Brennsee freezes
Two things side by side. The natural ice rink at Tennisanlage Krainer in the village is there every winter: free, floodlit from 8 am to 9 pm. And then there are the lakes. In cold winters the Brennsee and the Afritzer See freeze over and the lake becomes one big rink with curling and skaters, and from our balcony you look out over it. We cannot promise that, and we do not.
The natural ice rink in the village
At the Tennisanlage Krainer the village lays a natural ice rink every winter. Free, floodlit, open from 8 am to 9 pm. A few minutes' walk from the house. For children still learning, this is the place, not the lake.
The Brennsee
The lake lies at 750 metres and is 26 metres deep; it does not freeze every year and never on a fixed date. When it happens, usually after a few weeks of hard frost in January, the whole valley skates and curls on it, at their own risk. Ask at the tourist office or ask us whether the ice is bearing; nobody measures it officially.
Sportarena Bad Kleinkirchheim
A quarter of an hour's drive: the Sportarena has an ice rink, free, with skate hire for € 6. Handy if you have not brought skates.
Honest about the ice
If you come for the ice, you book on hope. If you come for the winter, the ice is a gift. The ski areas are a quarter of an hour and twenty minutes away, the thermal baths a quarter of an hour, and the ice rink in the village always works.
