Via ferrata (Klettersteige) in Carinthia, from Feld am See

Via ferrata is the finest halfway house between hiking and climbing: clipped to a steel cable, you climb safely across ledges and faces you would otherwise never reach. There are routes for every level in the immediate area.

What is a via ferrata?

A climbing route secured the whole way with steel cables, rungs and sometimes short ladders. With a via ferrata set (two karabiners on a shock absorber) you are attached at all times. You get real exposure, with the safety of a fixed line.

For beginners

Routes in grades A and B are a good place to start: plenty of climbing, little technique. For a first time, go with a guide or an experienced companion, who will teach you the basics in a single morning.

For experienced climbers

If you want to go further, Carinthia and, just over the border, Italy and Slovenia have routes up to and including grade D, with airy passages and long days on the rock. The Soča valley is a classic for a full day of via ferrata.

Equipment and safety

Required: a climbing helmet, a via ferrata set and a harness; all available to hire from sports shops in the region. Always check the weather (thunderstorms and steel cables do not mix) and set off early. Not sure about a route? Ask us and we will think it through with you.
