Gentle summits, wide views
The Nockberge take their name from their gently rounded summits, and that is what makes them such good hiking country: you walk high here, with wide views, and without any technical scrambling. The area has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2012, and the first routes start a few minutes' walk from our house.
Around the lakes
For a quiet day, walk from the house to the Brennsee and on towards the Afritzer See. Flat paths, water in sight the whole way, and plenty of spots along the route for a break or a swim.
Up into the Nockberge
From the valley you climb to alpine pastures and panoramic summits with views far across Carinthia. The Nockberge are a protected biosphere reserve, so you are hiking through a landscape that is being kept with care.
Take the lift up
During the lift season you do not have to climb the metres of ascent yourself: the mountain lifts nearby take you up and you start your hike at the top. The Sonnenschein Card gives you 15 per cent off the mountain lifts. That puts a panoramic route within reach with children, or with legs that are out of practice.
Want to start higher? Take the Nockalmstraße
If you want to start high, drive up the panoramic Nockalmstraße: there are car parks all along it where fine high-level hikes begin, often with a mountain hut for the Kaiserschmarrn you have earned.
For every level
From pushchair-friendly paths along the water to demanding day walks over several summits: the region has routes in every length and grade. We are glad to help you pick the right one for the weather and for what you feel like that day.
Five routes near the house
2-Seen-Runde
The classic: around the Brennsee and the Afritzer See, starting at the Kirchenplatz. Enough shade, enough water, and you can step straight into the lake along the way.
Kleine Dorfrunde
A quick stretch of the legs before breakfast, or for small children who cannot walk far yet.
Große Dorfrunde
A slightly wider loop through the village and along the water. Good as an evening walk.
Feldpannalm-Runde
Up to the alm, with a view over the valley. The toll road up costs €6.00, payable at the coin machine.
Mirnock, 2,110 metres
The local mountain, and by some way the hardest route on this list: almost 1,400 metres of ascent under your own steam. One for people who come for exactly that. A circular route from Feld am See via the Weg des Buches, back past the Wieseralm; set off early.
